Incorporation and Annexation should be opposed for many reasons
Incorporation and Annexation should be
opposed for many reasons.
Becoming part of a municipality will
likely result in higher property taxes. Almost all of the cities in
Miami-Dade have higher millage rates than UMSA does. Becoming part of
a municipality will result in increased fees for individuals and
businesses. This is because of duplication of services already being
provided by the county so you'll be taxed twice, by the county and
your new city. A new city creates another layer of bureaucracy so
your additional taxes will be used to fund another group of
politicians, bureaucrats, lobbyists, attorneys, etc. New
municipalities may choose to impose red light cameras to raise money
for the city. Miami-Dade County banned red light cameras for all of
unincorporated Miami-Dade. Judging by all the corruption in existing
cities, a new city will lead to more corruption and misuse of
taxpayer dollars. A new city will likely raise money for the city by
imposing excessive fees for minor code violations. It's also highly
likely your new city will eventually seek to annex other areas of
unincorporated Miami-Dade to increase its tax base especially if your
new city becomes financially unsustainable. Cities often use their
police departments for political purposes to raise money for the city
and crack down on political dissent. Cities may hire police officers
who have previously been fired for corruption or other misconduct. If
you don't want any of this then demand an end to incorporation and
annexation.
